The Green Tie: Charity Dinner & Induction Ceremony

On June 11, 2011, AKM held its first annual "Green Tie" event which showcased AKM Kings being inducted into the program. In attendance was Nashville Freedom Riders, parents, and local community leaders to celebrate this monumental occasion. Jonathan Martin, Channel 4 News reporter hosted the event along with AKM staff, volunteers, and mentors. Over $2,000 was raised, and we thank all of our loyal supporters for their donations.

Celebrating 5 Years of Service

July 11, 2011 marks the beginning of 5 years of existence for AKM. AKM continues to change the lives of young men around the city of Nashville with the support of volunteers, staff, and dedicated mentors. This year will include an array of activities for the organization. Be on the lookout for awareness events, and opportunities to meet the new class of AKM in the coming months.

Free Youth Football Camp

In conjunction with the West Nashville Broncos, AKM is hosting a free youth football camp for young men between the ages of 5-15 years of age. Camp will be held on Mondays thru Thursdays at Hadley Park from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. If you are interested, please stop by for sign-ups and special instructions. AKM Teams up with ONE NASHVILLE

Tuesday, November 9th, 2010, AKM was announced as one of the newest endorsing sponsors for the One Nashville campaign. AKM Programming at Meharry Medical

All The Kings Men programming extended to Meharry Medical College in the year 2010 for a 5 week session. The session focused on 12 young men who were ordered through the Juvenile Court System. In the upcoming year, the young men will be enrolled into AKM regular programming.

DMC Task Force Nashville

Eric Capehart, CEO of AKM is the newly elected President of the DMC Task Force in Nashville. Capehart will oversee all efforts to help find solutions, and reduce this major issue in the city of Nashville with the support of programming of AKM.

King of Summer Camp 2010

At the end of our camp, King Kalen Williams was named King of summer camp for dedication, learning the King’s philosophy, and making a positive influence for the other young men. Kalen Williams’s interests are music, playing piano, guitar, drums and singing.

Going Green with Sierra Club

This upcoming year AKM will be partnering with Sierra Club. Sierra Club will provide transportation to AKM for field trips dealing with helping the environment. As our goal to help save the planet, Sierra Club has become a great addition.

Nashville Top 30 Under 30: Harriet Vaughan

Harriet Vaughan, who was elected for the Board of Directors has recently been named one of the Nashville Top 30 under 30 honorees for 2010. Harriet has been very dedicated to recent flood relief efforts in Nashville in the African American community. She serves on the Fundraising committee for AKM, and professionally is a multi-media news reporter for the Tennessean.

Emerald City: A Benefit Fashion Show

AKM is hosting “Emerald City: A Benefit Fashion Show” on April 29th,2010 at the Scarritt Bennett Center. This year, fashion will be featured by Nashville designers, Charles Brown and Sara Mallory. Check out more details on our events section!

New Staff Member Joins AKM

We are proud to announce Timothy Hughes as the Assistant Program Director for AKM. As Assistant Program Director Timothy will create our general programs for AKM, and implement all activities concerning the young men.

A Gift for the Parents: Help Portrait

On December 12, 2009, our students and parents were given a special gift from the national campaign, “Help Portrait”. Help Portrait is an event organized by photographers who give their talents to mothers and children, taking professional pictures for free. We are very thankful to have been included in this national event.

Collegiate 100 Partnership

Tennessee State University’s Chapter of the Collegiate 100 Black Men has partnered with AKM to provide mentors to the organization for the next 5 years. Current President Mike McGaha has fully empowered this movement by encouraging interested members of the Collegiate 100 to become AKM mentors. This year, Collegiate 100 has provided 10 mentors to help the young men in the areas of academics, manhood and character building, and college preparation.

Channel 5 News Interview

Tuesday, October 27, news reporter Rodney Dunigan of Channel 5 News interviewed CEO Eric Capehart and AKM student Tyrone Edmiston.AKM student Tyrone Edmiston expressed why he has participated in the program for the past 3 years. Tyrone explained that AKM has helped him grow and learn more about himself since joining the program in 2007. The air date of this story will be announced soon.

The King's Course: Life After High School

This year's programming includes a new course that has been developed to prepare AKM junior and seniors for the next step in life, which is college. The purpose of The King's Course is to give them a clear understanding of how to be successful in college. AKM students will learn the importance of the ACT and SAT, of scholarships and financial aid, completing college applications, campus life, and college study habits, and other essential tools that a young man will need to be academically successful while in college.

Moving into the 3rd Year

As this new year kicks off, we have partnered with several agencies and task forces to serve as an advocate for African American boys. All The Kings Men strongly believes that if the young boy never comes into contact with the Juvenile Court, he will have a realistic opportunity for a successful life. This year, we are enrolling 17 young men to become KINGS.

Senior Portraits Taken by the Best

This year, AKM received senior portraits were taken by internationally known, McLellan Style. McLellan Style is a Nashville based photography company who donated their services to give the graduating seniors of AKM a free photo shoot. The young men who participated had a great time being models for a day. We cannot say thank you enough to this wonderful company.

CEO, Honoree for Top 30 Under 30

On Friday, July 10, 2009, Eric Capehart was announced to be one of Nashville’s outstanding philanthropists. On behalf of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) and Nashville’s Top 30 Under 30 committee, Eric was chosen along with others. Nashville Top 30 Under 30 is a highly accredited nomination and wonderful exposure for AKM. Many say there are no community leaders in the world helping to make this earth a better place. Eric has shown many characteristics of being on top while at a young age. This nomination is not only for him, but to show how hard work, and determination is needed for young men to follow.

Eric will receive his award on Sept. 19th at The Icon in The Gulch. We are very proud of Eric and all of his accomplishments.

AKM Welcomes New Staff Member

Phillip Moody, a native of Nashville, TN joins the staff of AKM. Phillip joins the team by assisting the Program Director with programming and marketing efforts. Currently, Phil is a junior at Tennessee State University where he is studying Mass Communications. Very diverse in fashion, and exposed to the fashion world, Phil dream is to become the first male, international known Wardrobe Stylist. He is goal-oriented, ambitious and has a love for helping young men see that you can do anything possible. AKM is very fortunate to have Phillip on the team. Fashion is his drive, helping young men with improving behavior and image, a great asset to add to the organization. We welcome Phil, and already he is doing great things!

Roca Wear Clothing Sponsored

Roca Wear sponsored clothing for this year’s AKM Induction Ceremony. Our students were very excited about receiving this gift from such an awesome establishment. Roca Wear donated graphic T’s with meaningful messages to encourage the boys to keep dreaming and fight the good fight. We cannot thank Roca Wear enough for their support. A huge thank you goes to them for connecting and contributing to the lives of our young men.

AKM forms Partnership with Metro Parks

On May 4, 2009, we have officially formed our partnership with the Metro Parks system in Nashville, TN. The Metro Parks and Recreation Department has a wide variety of facilities and programs in Davidson County. By forming this partnership this allows AKM to facilitate our program in any of their 22 community centers. We thank Metro Parks for allowing us to form this partnership and we are very excited about the future.

Channel 4 News Interviews Staff

Channel 4 WSMV news interviews our staff, students and mentors on its contribution to the community. The segment will air on Tuesday, May 26, 2009 on the 6:00pm news. We thank WSMV and Jonathan Martin, reporter for channel 4 in taking a high interest in our organization.

Life Members of AKM

Congratulations to Michael Battle and Davonte Rucker in becoming Life Members of AKM. These guys have worked really hard and overcame hardships to graduate high school. Our students become life members of the organization by graduating high school, and completing the Kings-in-Training program. Michael and Davonte are the first to be in this class and we are very excited to have them as life members and their future success.
